All you Need to Know About Dental Implants

Dental implants have revolutionised cosmetic dentistry by offering a permanent solution to missing teeth, and whether you have a single tooth missing, or you would like to replace your dentures with dental implants, this treatment is the ideal solution.

How Does it Work?

The treatment involves several key stages, the first being the insertion of titanium pins, which will provide the anchor support for the prosthetic tooth. If you are thinking about having dental implants in Thailand, you certainly wouldn’t be alone, as prices in Bangkok are very favourable when compared to the West, and with a Google search, you can be talking to a leading Bangkok clinic, who would ascertain your suitability for dental implant treatment.

Titanium Pins

The reason titanium is used is because this rare metal bonds very well with human bone and tissue, and after 6-8 weeks of the pin insertion, the prosthetic tooth can be fitted. The dentist would X-Ray the patient to determine whether or not the jawbone is suitable to accept the titanium pins, and there are two main types of dental implant.

Endosteal Implants

This is the most common form of dental implant that involves inserting titanium pins into the jawbone, which bond over time to provide a suitable anchor for the crown (prosthetic tooth). The majority of people are suitable for endosteal implants, however, it might be that the jawbone is inadequate to take the pin insertions, and in such a case, there are two options. The dentist could do a bone augmentation, which means grafting a small piece of bone into the jaw, which strengthens the area, or there is another solution, which is called subperiosteal implants.

Subperiosteal Implants

This is a different process, and instead of inserting titanium pins, a thin metal framework is fitted to the gums and the tooth line, onto which the prosthetic tooth is attached. There is a post inserted, and it is the metal framework that anchors the post, rather than a titanium pin. It should be noted that very few people have to resort to this form of treatment, as most have a suitable jawbone to have endosteal implants fitted.

Zygomatic Implants

This form of treatment is very rarely used and rather than fitting the implants to the jawbone, they are fitted to the cheekbone, which is quite a complicated procedure. The dentist first needs to carry out a thorough examination to determine the best possible solution, and if the patient is agreeable, the treatment can be scheduled.

All on Four

“All on four” is the dental term used when replacing a full set of upper or lower teeth with implants. The 4 indicates the number of titanium pins that are inserted, and the prosthetic teeth would be made into a single bridge. Many retired people prefer to have dental implants rather than having to wear dentures, and by booking the treatment in Bangkok, you can also take a magical holiday in Thailand, the tropical paradise.
